VPS Sizing Guide: How Much CPU, RAM and Storage Does Your Business Need?

A practical guide for Bahrain businesses choosing a VPS for a website, online store, POS or ERP back end – what each resource does and typical starting sizes.

One of the first questions we hear from businesses moving to a virtual private server is simple: how big should it be? Buy too small and the system slows down at busy times. Buy too big and you pay every month for capacity you never use. This guide explains what each resource does and gives typical starting points.

What each resource does

  • vCPU (processor cores) – handles requests and calculations. More cores help when many users are active at the same time or when reports and background jobs run.
  • RAM (memory) – holds the operating system, web server, PHP or Node processes and the database cache. Running out of RAM is the most common cause of a slow server.
  • SSD storage – your application files, database, uploaded images and logs. Leave room for growth and for local backup copies.
  • Bandwidth / data transfer – the data sent to visitors. Image-heavy websites and file downloads use the most.

Typical starting points

Company website or small WordPress / Laravel site

  • 1–2 vCPU, 2–4 GB RAM, 40–80 GB SSD
  • Good for a bilingual company website with a contact form and blog.

Online store, POS or ERP back end, or several websites

  • 2–4 vCPU, 4–8 GB RAM, 80–160 GB SSD
  • Databases and queues need more memory; product images and invoices need more storage.

Business-critical or multi-branch systems

  • 4+ vCPU, 8 GB+ RAM, 160 GB+ SSD, sized to measured usage
  • Consider separating the database, adding monitoring and testing backup restores regularly.

These are starting points, not rules. A well-optimised application can run comfortably on a smaller server than a poorly optimised one.

Questions to answer before choosing

  1. How many people use the system at the same time, and at what peak hours?
  2. How large is the database today, and how fast is it growing?
  3. Do you store many images, PDFs or attachments?
  4. Where are your users – mostly in Bahrain and the GCC, or worldwide? This affects the best data-centre region.
  5. Do you have data-residency or compliance requirements?
  6. Who will apply security updates and check backups?

Start small, then scale

Most cloud providers let you resize a VPS later. We usually recommend starting with a sensible size, monitoring CPU, memory and disk usage for a few weeks, and upgrading only when the numbers show it is needed.

Friend Tech offers Starter, Business and Managed VPS packages, each sized to the application. See our VPS hosting page or request a quote and tell us what you plan to run.
